Theologies of Michael Reeves are considered to be very unique
Theologies of Michael Reeves are considered to be very unique; he presents a unique and fresh perspective on scripture, ethics, and spirituality. While he does present traditional Christian beliefs, he also tackles issues that many people doubt, such as the existence of God. This is not a negative read, but rather a must-read for anyone who does not have a firm grasp on traditional Christian beliefs.
Religion and Spirituality is well represented in this book. There are several poems that illustrate religious sentiment as well. I especially liked that Reeves took time out to write about his own spiritual journey. Throughout the book, he speaks of the loneliness of being a new member of a strange faith community. It is refreshing to hear a new member of a new faith community speak of the loneliness that comes with membership.
The author begins his book by briefly outlining his own personal beliefs, and then delving into his experience as a young person in Pentecostalism. Part of the rationale for writing this book is so other Christians will have a similar awakening. He admits that there was some doubt while growing up; however, he is glad that he had the chance to grow up in a faith community and experience the separation of church and state. The reader can sense the passion in Reeves' voice as he relates the many trials he experienced as a young man. The reality of these trials and the hardships he faced are portrayed in a positive light – no harshness or despair.
Part of Reeves' Theology of Spirituality series, which began with his last book, Faith and the Future, is directed towards those outside of the Christian faith. While the previous books have been more positive in tone, this book is more of a departure from the previously written work. The author wishes to put his audience in a position where they can experience a similar awakening as he did. With that said, some of the more thoughtful conversations and discussions take place off of the actual beliefs and principals of religion. This is done in an inviting manner to allow all spiritual people to participate.
One of the most interesting points that will be discussed within this collection is the concept of “trickle-down effect.” This concept is centered on the idea that whatever you focus your attention on increases the effectiveness of all your existing beliefs. Therefore, if you are a person who feels strongly about the Christian religion, but has questions regarding the life being lived under that faith, perhaps this new life style would be a motivating factor. Perhaps another person who has completely different religious beliefs but has strong Christian faith would be a better subject for this particular book.
The majority of this collection is dedicated to Reeves' life – his early years up to his death. The focus is on his life and the changes that happened as a result of his shifting beliefs. He discusses his trials with substance abuse and his eventual recovery. There is also a good amount of space devoted to his family – his wife, his two children, and his friends and acquaintances.
However, the real meat of this text is the stories of those who came in contact with him during his lifetime – his friends and acquaintances. These are the people that truly influenced the man who was so full of energy, yet remained so humble and down-to-earth. Some of the topics that he covers in these books are – his relationships, his time as a teacher, his work and achievements, and finally his death. One thing that I thought was brilliantly represented in this text is – Michael Reeves' courage to share his story and his life's lessons with the world. He did not shy away from anyone who asked to listen – in fact, quite the opposite in fact.
For those who haven't read any of Reeves' work before, this is a book that must be tried. Those who have already read this book however, I would recommend it to other Christians. This book will introduce you to a man who lived his life in an explosive and memorable way, but who was also guided by the love of God. I highly recommend this to everyone, especially Christians, because it is a very good text on a life event that touched so many lives. And in a very good introduction, too.
