Tony Jones is an author, leader in the emerging Christian movement
Tony Jones is an author, leader in the emerging Christian movement, and a theologian. His book, “God is Not Man,” expounds many of the same themes that other Christians have been using to argue against traditional views of God. His message is simple and compelling: If God is not perfect, why did God destroy his only son, Jesus Christ? This book can help to strengthen a faith that has lost its faith.
Jones starts his book by taking us through his story, which many have followed before. While serving in the military, Jones was court-martial and later discharged due to a “freeloader syndrome.” This was his way of life – to spend his days on earth enjoying himself, earning a tax free income, living as he pleased, without giving much attention to his calling or the things that were important to him. But his “path was uncast” when he began to see “a certain pattern” in the things that happened around him and in his life. The first step towards recovery was finding a new path in life.
Jones found this new path while attending Graduate School at Wheaton College in Texas. He had a problem with his conscience over the death of a friend who was a close friend. After spending several years in therapy and trying to resolve his guilt issues, Jones came to realize that his problem lied with the society in general. Our “mindset” was being geared toward materialism and “money,” which was destroying our relationships, family, communities, and even our country. We were “entrepreneurs” and “self-made millionaires.”
This led Jones to begin his search for a system to help him understand what was going wrong. He knew that he needed to return to a real “way of life,” one based on “spiritual values,” devotion to a “belief in a superior reality,” and appreciation of all that he had created – both individually and together. This led Jones to the discovery of “The Secret.” It was then that Jones began to see how important it was to stop seeing the world as “other than good and appropriate.”
When we live our lives with these definitions in our minds, we limit ourselves. We become selfish and greedy. We destroy our relationships, families, and even our country. We lose sight of who we are and what we have. We start to think only in terms of our survival and the accumulation of material possessions – material wealth that inevitably brings addiction, depression, and misery.
The author of The Spiritual Life of America, Jones claims that his work is capable of providing a “cure” for the disease that plagues our nation today. In an interesting and thought-provoking way, Jones encourages people to consider the “spiritual riches” that they possess before investing their money and time in “the rat race.” This book also serves to remind us that although we do have money to invest, that does not mean we need to spend it on frivolous things. Instead, we can invest it wisely by “spiritually” living within our means, so that we can continually grow and expand.
Jones addresses the issue of why the pursuit of material wealth is not compatible with spiritual growth. He argues that in order for true spiritual growth to occur, one must find “a richer experience.” He goes on to state that this richer experience can only come from a relationship with “a higher power.” Jones also challenges readers to “re-learn” their religious traditions. Re-learning or understanding your traditions can help you to find deeper meaning in your life. In fact, by doing so, you can begin to understand more fully who you are.
Jones has been called “the most significant living American” by Time Magazine and “the leading living spiritualist” by The Friendly Ghost. This very positive and influential author has lived his life in such a way that he understands what it means to be spiritual – both spiritually and in terms of his life. He provides individuals with a way of looking at their lives that will enable them to uncover their true purpose and meaning in life. His books, DVDs and other products are designed to assist people in uncovering the secrets that will empower them to live life in a way that is consistent with who they are as people – and as a human being. The Secrets of Programming Your Mind and Body is no exception.
