Theology in a sentence is one of the most difficult things to grasp. Many of the most popular authors on the topics of religion and theology have given us statements that are often “cluttered with irrelevant and unnecessary details”. While these writers can be gracious, they fail to teach us how to truly grasp the meaning of what they say. This is a prime reason that so many people have difficulty learning the basic theories of their faith.
As a former student of theology, I encountered this issue all too often. I found that a great deal of time was wasted simply because students didn't take the time to understand the underlying meanings of the sentences that they read. A theology in a sentence is very important, and must be taken quite seriously if you expect to find truth in your religious life. Without it, you'll be spinning your wheels…and possibly wasting your life.
Theology in a sentence is nothing more than an explanation of why you believe what you do. The theories of religion that we are taught in Sunday school or our philosophy classes are merely there to convince us that our life should be lived in accordance with these ideas. Theologies help us make sense out of our lives. They are important for our understanding of life, but they are not the whole story.
Theists say that their particular philosophy or religion is the right one. That it is the only right one. They argue that those who do not believe the same thing as them are living in a “heat” of confusion and doubt, and are therefore making mistakes. It's their own fault, they say, and they will spend eternity trying to straighten things out…until they die.
Some atheists say that there is no such thing as “the right way” to live. We're all just “plants”, they say, and we all get mixed up and end up doing things in our own way. It's our personal choices…so how could someone say that someone else's life is wrong because they choose to live differently?
Well, if you believe in the Big Bang Theory or intelligent design, or the idea that your life is the product of a divine plan, then you are free to believe whatever you want. You don't have to follow the masses, or the religious establishments, or the guidelines of society…or even what other people think. You can believe whatever you want, and I encourage you to.
But if you don't believe that? Are you still obligated to live by the rules of society, religion, and the state? Aren't you at liberty to do your own thing, and believe whatever you want? Well, that's a good question, isn't it? What about those who don't believe in these things; what's the difference?
Well, in a sentence, it might look like this…but that's not how it's done. It's not how you should do things, and what you should believe. You are not compelled by anyone to believe anything, unless you are being forced to by religious zealots who want to control your life. The best way to live your life, and what you should believe is whatever makes you happy.
I'm not saying that there is no truth out there, that there isn't some deep underlying truth out there, that really does matter. And believe what you want, not what someone else thinks. I'm not trying to convince you to change your mind, because that would be a lie, and an invasion of personal space. Believe what makes you happy. If you believe that your life is more important than others, and that you have a right to live a great life, then you will believe anything you want.
People who only believe everything except what is important to them, aren't really living their lives. They aren't really living their life at all. They only believe what they need to believe so that they can feel safe and go on. They only believe everything except what is important to them.
What is necessary for you to live your life is to find the right beliefs, to form the right mental models about life and about your own self, and then to start believing them wholeheartedly. Start to see the world through the right lenses. Look outside of yourself and see the world the way you want to see it, not the way anyone else sees it. Just believe that you will become a great person if you believe that belief, and then begin the process of making it real. That is theology in a sentence; beginning to believe and hope that you are growing and maturing into a great, unique individual.
