Two Kingdom Theology is the official teaching of the Roman Catholic Church and is used in the liturgy as well as in the daily lives of most Catholics. It's also referred to as “theosis” which is derived from the Greek word for “being god”. Most of the Roman Catholics who currently teach this believe that salvation is a free gift that God offers to all men, regardless of their sin history. Those who teach that salvation is by grace alone without any works believe that salvation is achieved through faith.
These two kingdom themes are used very commonly in the Catholic Church. In fact, many of the most basic teachings of the Catholic Church are based off of the two kingdoms theories. Most modern Christians do not believe that salvation is achieved through works. However, two kingdoms concepts are commonly used in Catholic theology and it has become quite an influential thought within the major church today.
The major teaching of the Roman Catholic Church is found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. This Catechism also uses two kingdoms concepts. For instance, one section of the Catechism discusses the idea that salvation is through the grace of Christ. It then goes on to say that salvation is by grace through faith, and then the idea of submission to Christ is also mentioned. This entire concept of two kingdoms theory can be found in most Catholic churches.
Two kingdom theology can also be found in the Old Testament. Many Christians believe that the creation stories in the Bible teach them about two separate beings. These beings are referred to as the Children of God and the People of the House of Israel. Some scholars argue that the idea of two separate beings in the beginning of the Bible can be a later interpretation on the original story. Still, some modern Christians have applied this idea to their beliefs about salvation and God in general.
Two kingdom theology can also be found in other non-religious works. For example, American author Tex Watson has produced several books which apply this idea to early America. Watson believes that the early American settlers experienced two different spiritual experiences during the course of their lives.
Two Kingdom Theology has been further developed by the followers of John Calvin. Calvin taught that salvation is not through the grace of Christ, but through the grace of God through the exercise of natural law. This would mean that salvation is through the unmerited acts of men which do not involve any supernatural revelation from God. In order to qualify as a saved person Calvin taught that a person must have a personal relationship with God. This personal relationship between God and a saved sinner is known as the doctrine of election.
Two Kingdom Theology has had a significant impact on the thought of many American Christians. Because of this, some non-Christians have referred to Christians as Calvinism. However, those who adhere to the teachings of Calvinism believe that salvation is through the grace of God alone. Because of this doctrine, they hold to the belief that all men are saved. They also believe that salvation is independent of Christianity and that salvation is seen as being independent of both religion and faith. Believing this to be a core teaching of Calvinism has resulted in a variety of definitions that are used by non-Calvinists to define what it means.

It is believed that two kingdoms existed in the time of Christ and that when He returned the Church would one again become a spiritual kingdom.
